Some seasons of our lives—some days, in fact—are just busier than others. And the busier we are, the more prone we become to stress. This is especially true when we find ourselves staring down that endless to-do list, or the feeling that there just isn't enough time to do everything during what time we do have!
And while we know that going to a yoga class will help us unwind, release stress, and enjoy the present moment, it’s not always possible to drop everything and hit the yoga studio. Sometimes all we have are a few minutes to spare.
Fortunately, there's a meditation for that.
The next time you find yourself feeling stressed and overwhelmed, give yourself just five minutes (or three, if that’s all you can spare) to bring your attention to your breath.
Seriously! It’s as easy as closing your eyes, and taking in a few slow, deep breaths.
As you breathe, consciously slow down the pace of your breath, and savor it—especially the exhale. Follow the breath in through the nose, becoming aware of how it fills the belly and chest. Then notice how the belly contracts, shrinking back toward your spine as you breathe out.
Notice your body. Regardless of whether you are sitting standing upright, notice your feet planted firmly on the ground. Let your spine grow long and tall, and allow the shoulders to release down your back and away from the ears. Take a few more breaths just like this, becoming aware of any and all feelings and sensations in your body. And if you find yourself becoming distracted by your thoughts, kindly bring your attention back to your next breath in.
You can stay here for anywhere from two to five minutes, or however long it takes to turn down the volume on the thoughts that bounce around inside of your mind.
When you're ready, open your eyes. And smile, because no matter what life throws at you next, you've got this.
